| The Eternal Indian Science of Directions |
 |
Vastu is the science of architecture. It means 'dwelling' in the Sanskrit language. Like many other resources, Vastu is a gift of Vedas to the Indian culture. Vastu Shastra is part of the second Veda scriptures, the Yajur Veda. According to ancient Indian belief Vastu concentrates on the five basic elements of nature, namely; Water, Air, Fire, Sky and Earth. These five elements are also called Pancbhutas. Human being needs adequate share of each of these panchbhutas to prosper. But, to be cautios man also needs to protect himself from the severity of these panchbhutas. As per ancient Vastu, construction of house was meant primarily for this purpose. |
The evolution of Vastu was to help us channelize the energies from the five elements in a manner such that it emmits positive effects on the persons living in the hous. In Vastu, shapes and directions are the most vital aspects for designing a dwelling.
Vastu, the oldest form of architecture, follows specific rules and methods for achieving the desired result, which is a happy demeanour and a peaceful environment for the inhabitants of the place, which ultimately results in prosperity and productivity.
In modern India, Vastu has evolved as a method of choice and most of the constructors and individuals are religiously following the principles of Vastu Shastra, which were founded by the sages in the Vedic Era, thousands of years ago. Vastu is gaining popularity not just in India, but worldwide. People are accepting its principles and benefitting from it. |

| The Vastu Constant - Vastu Purusha |

|
Vastu Purusha is believed to have born from the perspiration of the powerful Hindu God, Shiva. According to the hindu mythology, Vastu Purusha, is present in each plot, big or small. The Vastu Purusha is supposed to have a unique shape and body structure (see image). It is believed that the body of the Vastu Purusha is spread all over the length and breadth of the plot. It is hence considered to worship the Vastu Purusha, before begining any construction on any plot. The Vastu Purusha is known as the god of Vastu and it is believed that the directions of a house should be well aligned with the Vastu Purusha. |
| Principles of Vastu |
The principles of Vastu are based on the unique science of "absolute time and space" as well as " energy and matter". The Vastu Principles are devised in such a manner that the building constructed using Vastu Principles are in rhythm with the spatial form and hence are more appealing. They emit postive spiritual energies as an effect of following the Vastu principles.
The Basic Principles of Vastu follows the theory of Five Elements. The major emphasis is on the directions and alignments of the different elements of the building to be constructed. Besides this, time and muhurts also play an important role. There are specific rules for choosing the direction for the entrance and difference rooms of the house. |

| The Vastu Logic |
| Based on the different activities of mind and body of a human being at various time of the day, the ancient people designed various components of a house. These elements of a house to accord the movement of the
celestial bodies and daily human activities according to the rotation of
the earth and the position of the sun throughout the day.
Apart from the regular four directions, East, West, North and South, they introduced four new directions, created when the two directions converge to form an angle. These intermediate directions are believed to be more important due the simple fact they have an effect on both the directions. Each of these eight directions has a significance of its own. Also, at different times of the day, the sun enters a different quarter of the direction, which makes the Timing and Activity also very important. |
| Effect of Time |
The period between 3 am and 6 am, just before
sunrise is called Brahma Muhurta. This time the sun is
in the Northeastern section of the house. These hours
are ideal for Yoga, meditation, or study.
From 6 am to 9 am, the sun is in the eastern part of the
house, which should be low lying to absorb the beneficial
ultraviolet rays. This is the time for bathing and preparing
for the day, so east is good location for bathroom.
The time between 9 am to 12 in the noon, when the sun
is in the Southeast part of the house, is the best time
for preparing food to be eaten later in the day. The kitchen
and the bathroom are both wet areas of the house, positioned
to receive the strong sunlight to keep them dry and hygienic.
After lunch it is time for rest, so the time between noon
and 3 pm is called Vishranti, the resting period. The
sun is now in the south, the best position for a bedroom.
Now time for studying and work, and the sun is now in
the southwest section of the house, the ideal location
for a study or library.
The period between 6 pm and 9 pm is the time for eating,
sitting or reading. The west is the best location for
dining or sitting room.
The time between 9 pm and midnight, when the sun is in
the Northwest part of the house, where cowshed is located,
was the time to attend to the animals. This part is a
good location for another bedroom.
The time between midnight and 3 am, when the sun is in
the Northern section, is the time of darkness and secrecy.
The North is the best place to hide treasure or valuables,
to keep them protected. |

not end with a 0, that is 10, 20 etc. •
The geometrical axis of the plot should be aligned with
the axis of the earth’s magnetic field, that is,
one set of boundaries of a plot should be parallel to
the North-South axis and the other set to east- West axis.
If the boundary lines are not parallel to the magnetic
axis, such land is poor for overall growth, peace and
happiness.

• If the ratio of two adjacent sides of a size
is 1:1 and every corner is a 90 degree angle ,it is called
a square and is best for overall growth. If the ratio
of width and depth of a site is within 1:15 and all corners
are of 90 degree, it is also good for growth. If the depth
is more than twice the width, the size becomes weaker
for growth. |
